Half-Life is a foundational first-person shooter (FPS) developed by Valve Corporation and published by Sierra Studios in 1998. It serves as the debut title for both the developer and the Half-Life series. Unlike many shooters of its era, which focused on arcade-style action, *Half-Life* revolutionized the genre by integrating seamless, scripted storytelling directly into the gameplay without the use of traditional cutscenes.

Plot Overview

The game follows Dr. Gordon Freeman', a theoretical physicist recently employed at the Black Mesa Research Facility, a top-secret underground laboratory in New Mexico. During a routine experiment involving an anomalous materials sample, a catastrophic event known as a "Resonance Cascade" occurs.

This event tears a rift between Earth and a border dimension called Xen, allowing hostile alien creatures to flood the facility. Gordon must navigate the crumbling complex, battling both extraterrestrial threats and a specialized military unit—the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit (HECU)—sent to "clean up" the incident by silencing all witnesses.

Gameplay Mechanics

Half-Life is characterized by its blend of high-octane combat and environmental puzzle-solving. Key features include:

  • Continuous Narrative: The story is told entirely through Gordon's eyes. Players maintain control of the character during scripted sequences, creating an immersive, "unbroken" experience.

Development and Legacy
